Based at London’s Port of Tilbury, this groundbreaking and innovative warehouse, chilled store and logistic centre facility is the largest temperature controlled quayside distribution hub in Europe.
The warehouse is served by 25 dock levellers, 1,200m2 of office space and was designed with flexibility in mind as the site can be partitioned off to operate at different temperatures to meet specific customer requirements.
Featuring cutting edge technology, the new multi-temperature controlled facility can store over 25,000 pallets and handle in excess of 2.5 million cases of chilled and fresh produce per week within the 21,000m2 development for the UK’s market leader in chilled food distribution.
The works were split into two phases; the first to construct the base build warehouse and the second to fit-out the building to suit the end user specific requirements. The overall project was completed in nine months at a cost in excess of £17.5m.
The works were constructed on a very tight site adjacent to the quayside, which was in full operation throughout the duration of the construction works. The site utilised over 4,800 precast concrete driven piled foundations, a fibre reinforced concrete ground slab and over 1,300t of structural steel.
calfordseaden’s appointment on the project involved a ‘hands on’ approach, seeing the project through from conception to completion and working with the client and the design team from an early stage providing Principal Designer services, cost, tendering and contract selection advice throughout the various stages of the scheme and design development.
