Becky Lowther Apprenticeship to Chartership

As we celebrate National Apprenticeship Week 2024, we speak to Becky Lowther, Quantity Surveyor. Becky started her apprenticeship in 2014 and has since gone on to become a Chartered Quantity Surveyor. Becky talks about her experiences as an apprentice, the importance of apprenticeships, and provides advice to apprentices.

Finding my Apprenticeship

Whilst completing my UCAS application at sixth form, I had doubts about going to university and was unsure if it was right for me. I saw a job notice in the school library of an opportunity as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor at
calfordseaden. My uncle was a Quantity Surveyor, which meant I had a base understanding of their roles and responsibilities.

Impact of my Apprenticeship

I believe that balance in your learning is important in the construction industry, and my apprenticeship helped me find that balance between working and studying. At university, I learned the basics at a technical level, such as the legal aspects, contracts, and the economical side to the role.

University also helped me develop discipline, which benefitted me at work as I became accustomed to meeting deadlines. At work, I was able to enhance my communicational skills through talking to clients, contractors,
and sub-contractors. I think the practical experience you gain from an apprenticeship is significant in your development. If I had the opportunity to go back and decide on my career route, I
would certainly choose to do an apprenticeship again.

Advice to Future Apprentices

I would advise apprentices to do one in an area in which you enjoy and have a desire to learn more about. Learning on the job and gaining valuable experience is pivotal. Being eager to develop your skills and working hard in your apprenticeship and in your full-time career pays off and you will notice the rewards for your hard work and dedication.

I would also encourage future apprentices to research potential careers, as there are so many opportunities and professions that you will not be aware of. Researching online and attending careers fairs will be beneficial in
helping you decide what field you want to do an apprenticeship in. There are endless opportunities available across many industries.
