With March comes the return to Brighton’s seafront for the annual CIH South East Conference 2017. This is the biggest housing conference held in the south east and sees a huge number of industry folk flock to the seaside town to catch up with clients and colleagues about all things housing.

calfordseaden’s staff were among the crowd and just like we have done for the past 15 years the conference has been running, we were there supporting it. This year’s conference was condensed to two and half days, opening on Monday afternoon and, in what was a smaller conference than previous years, our stand stood proudly in the middle of the exhibition space and was not one to be missed.

The conference provided a number of interesting and insightful sessions, including top tips for negotiating, exploring the need for innovative thinking in joint working and how influencing the planners can help push development plans through the pipeline. Our Head of Design, John Spence, chaired the latter session along with Chris Blundell, Director of Development and Commercial Services at Golding Homes and Paul Hunter, Head of Research at The Smith Institute.

Both Chris and Paul gave presentations that set out the current challenges for house building. A number of challenges and opportunities to meet government’s target of a million new homes by 2020 were highlighted, including Brexit, the government’s housing white paper, the debate over use of green belt land and off-site manufacture.

The audience was engaged with the speaker’s discussions and lots of interesting points were made throughout the session, including shifting to off-site manufacture to increase housing supply, using design to make new builds add value to a surrounding area and the possibility of organisations working as a consortium to ensure steady flow and consistency on projects, as seen on one of calfordseaden’s projects, Advantage South West.

The session was in-depth and insightful with lots of thought provoking questions to leave the audience thinking. And after a few more networking opportunities over lunch, the housing industry left Brighton in peace. Well until next year, of course.
