calfordseaden gives tour of Packington for the Housing Forum National Conference

Guy Rapley, Paul Miller and Alex Burton attended this year’s Housing Forum National Conference in London. The theme of this year’s conference was “The Great Housing Challenge” and the day featured a number of seminars and discussions regarding the topic.

The conference opened with a statement from the Housing Forum’s Chairman, Andy von Bradsky, and concluded with a walking tour of the City Road Basin in Islington and presentation at the award-winning Packington regeneration scheme.

Guy Rapley was one of the speakers at the Packington presentation and discussed the delivery of key principles in the regeneration of the former sink estate, including the innovative and highly successful manner in which the project has been managed. Guy paid particular attention to the benefits of client participation, getting the quality right first time and the invaluable lessons learned procedure.

The Packington Estate is a multi-award winning regeneration project and young people working on the scheme benefitted from the Prince’s Trust ‘Get into Construction’ programme. The foundation commented on the estate stating “Packington provides a key case study of sophisticated and successful estate regeneration, both for its urban form and for its social inclusiveness”. Former Prime Minister David Cameron stated in January 2016 that his pledge to regenerate rundown estates was “to emulate the overhaul of the Packington Estate in Islington where 538 structurally unsound flats were replaced by 791 houses and flats, 491 of them for social rent.”
