calfordseaden Quantity Surveyor Jenny Alexander recently returned from a two-week trip with Smile Charity Uganda, participating in what she has described as “a humbling experience”.
Jenny took part in teaching at and building schools, and her group also held a children’s club in a church located in a slum on the outskirts of the capital, Kampala. Another one of the group’s objectives was to educate and normalise feminine hygiene for girls over 10 years of age that they had contact with.
“I took particular interest in the lack of health and safety around the ‘site’ at the school I was at,” said Jenny. “However, I am pleased to say that in the 7 days I was at the school, I did not witness a single accident, not even amongst the children who just wanted to help every step of the way.
“I would like to thank all those from the calfordseaden Southend office who supported me on this trip, and would also like to give special thanks to the IT department for providing me with a laptop and projector to take out for the charity’s use – all very much appreciated!”
