Completing my Apprenticeship – Harry Jessop

Congratulations to Harry Jessop, one of our talented Quantity Surveyors, for achieving a 2:1 in his Level 6 Chartered Surveying Degree at London South Bank University! Harry, who joined joined calfordseaden as an Apprentice in September 2020, reflects on his dissertation project, how he balanced work and his studies, and shares his advice for those considering the apprenticeship route.

My Dissertation

“I focused my research project on Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and its implementation in the UK’s built environment. I chose this topic because one of the projects I worked on last year, Transport House, was constructed using MMC. It’s something that is becoming more popular within the industry and I felt as if gaining a deeper understanding would benefit me as it is applicable to my current role and will be in the future.

My research was conducted using both quantitative and qualitative methods. I referenced existing literature, such as journal articles, and issued a survey to my colleagues at calfordseaden and external industry professionals.

I concluded that MMC has the potential to help meet the UK’s housing demands, but only if integrated early and planned effectively. Many past implementations fell short due to a lack of early-stage planning and integration.”

Balancing Work and Studies

“From experience, an apprenticeship can be more intense than the traditional university route, as you have to manage your performance both at work and academically. However, taking this route has been hugely beneficial as the knowledge you gain both on site and in the classroom is invaluable.

I found that having a dedicated study day each week helped me structure and schedule my workload. Everyone at calfordseaden was very supportive, offering flexibility if I ever needed some additional time to focus on my studies. My colleagues have also supported me throughout, which I am thankful for. The majority of the respondents to my survey were from my colleagues and they always provided me with useful ideas and feedback.”

Advice and What’s Next

“If you are considering the apprenticeship route, I would thoroughly recommend doing so. There are so many benefits, including having a job guaranteed at the end of your course, you get paid whilst you learn and gain valuable work experience, and you can apply the theoretical side of your studies to your day-to-day work and vice-versa.

My advice would be to stay committed and make the most of the support network around you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or seek help from colleagues or classmates.  Sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and learning from each other can make a big difference throughout your journey.

My next goal is to gain chartership whilst at calfordseaden, which I aim to sit in March 2026. I also aim to keep working, developing, and growing in my role!”
