Could car manufacturers hold the key for the future of constructing homes?

Last week Joanne Ellson took a tour of the Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility in Solihull, along with other Buildoffsite members to discuss the possibility of factory produced homes. Read her comments from the visit below.

“I was part of 30 members of Buildoffsite who took a tour of the Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility. The visit included a full guided tour of the manufacturing plant to see the various Range Rover models being built. The precision and accuracy of how the luxury cars were built, even on mass, was amazing.

We were there to discuss how this understanding of on mass production could be used in the construction sector. Understanding that each car that comes off the production line is a different model to a client’s specific specification sours any argument that if we applied factory build to houses, they would all be the same. Having seen the way Jaguar Land Rover production is planned, one could argue there is more repetition of defects and wastage of time, money and materials in our current way of building houses, than there would ever be in factory produced homes.”
