Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: A Conversation with Justin Aroyeun during National Inclusion Week

As we celebrate National Inclusion Week, we shed light on the stories and perspectives of individuals who contribute our society and workforce. Justin Aroyeun, a second-generation Nigerian, shares his journey and experiences related to diversity, equality, and inclusion. His insights highlight the importance of embracing diversity, addressing cultural differences, and driving positive change within organisations.
Could you tell us a bit about your background Justin?
My parents migrated from Nigeria and their experiences in the UK were vastly different from mine. While my parents worked harder to establish themselves, I was born and raised in the UK and focused on working smarter, to achieve my goals.
One notable aspect of my background is the cultural difference between my parents’ generation and my own. My parents often felt forced to be more reserved due to the cultural gap, whereas I did the opposite and approached life with stronger aspirations and determination. I have hope and belief that I can attain my goals, regardless of the resistance I may face.
How has your experience been with calfordseaden?
My experiences at calfordseaden have played a significant role in shaping my perspective. I am part of a team that is exceptionally diverse, consisting of individuals from various cultural backgrounds, different age groups, and a healthy gender balance. I take pride in being a member of such a culturally rich team, and believe that my team have been instrumental in helping me relate to people on various levels.
What does diversity, equality, and inclusion mean to you?
For me, diversity is about breaking stereotypes and challenging preconceived notions of what individuals should be. Equality, on the other hand, means ignoring superficial characteristics like race, gender, or nationality and focusing on individual performance and contributions. Inclusion is the acceptance and celebration of an individual’s unique identity and what they bring to the table. I value the fresh perspectives and efficiency that individuals from different backgrounds bring, and would like to emphasise the importance of treating everyone equally and embracing those differences.
How would you advocate for diversity with someone who doesn’t understand it’s importance?
When dealing with people who may not understand the importance of diversity, I feel the need to emphasise the significance of representation. Diversity matters because it opens up opportunities for the younger generation and supplies them with role models to look up to.
Do you have any advice to give organisations in relation to diversity and inclusion?
I believe that many organisations are making active attempts to promote diversity, but these efforts often stem from a business perspective rather than a humanitarian desire for change. I advocate for more community engagement and involvement of the younger generation. Their experiences, creativity, and fresh perspectives can drive innovation. I believe in moulding and embracing the younger generation to foster positive change and create a more inclusive society.
Conclusion
Justin’s journey and insights serve as a reminder of the importance of diversity, equality, and inclusion in our workplaces and society as a whole. His experiences at calfordseaden showcase the positive impact of diverse teams and the need for continuous improvement in fostering an inclusive environment.
