calfordseaden is pleased to welcome Tom Masters, who joins the M&E team in our Birmingham office. This new appointment is part of our ongoing growth ambitions to strengthen our offering across the wider Midlands and north of the country.
I joined the industry when I was just 17 years old, working with my dad on construction sites. At the time, I thought it would be good to get some qualifications under my belt to fall back on, so I started my HNC (Higher National Certificate) at college. After gaining my HNC, I was offered an opportunity to join a building services company. I never used to consider myself the academic type, but my experience gave me confidence to do a BEng degree at university. After graduating with a First Class Honours, I was promoted to Senior Engineer and offered to do a Masters, which I am due to complete this year.
I am proud of what I have achieved in my career in a fairly short space of time, however I am hungry to continue to learn more. So, when the opportunity to join calfordseaden was presented to me I was extremely keen to find out more. Through meeting Richard Wilson (Partner) for my interview and researching more about the company, it was clear that calfordseaden is a company where I could really get my teeth stuck into projects and take my career to the next level.
I was expecting the process of joining a new company in the middle of a pandemic to be quite challenging, but I can confidently say that I have had more of a positive experience than I have had in any of my previous roles. From the very start, I have felt extremely supported by the team, who are always available to answer questions. Through experiencing the positive team dynamic, I have felt encouraged me to put myself forward and support them in return. It truly is a team effort.
One skill that I think I bring to this new role is taking initiative and being able to adapt. Where there is an opportunity that has not previously been considered, I am always keen to raise this with whoever is running the project as a potential idea to consider in the future. I think this helps to ensure we are providing the best possible service to clients, that truly considers quality and cost.
I am extremely proud of myself or achieving a first-class honour in my degree, an achievement that I feel recognises the effort I put in and passion I have for my career. I hope to continue to learn and grow at calfordseaden, and my next steps are to build more client relationships, gain more responsibility and in the next 2 years hopefully become chartered.
