What were you doing prior to your new role?
Prior to joining calfordseaden, I worked for a multi-disciplined practice based in Worcester with a base in Birmingham. I have been working in the industry for 30 years and have worked in most sectors including Residential, Education, Healthcare and Commercial.
What is it that made you choose calfordseaden?
I was encouraged by the company ethos, which aims to support individuals throughout their career paths and encourages ambition at every level.
The position presents an exciting opportunity that I think will harness my collaborative and supportive working style. I am eager to share the drive and ambition of the business in growing the team.
How would your colleagues and friends describe you?
Hopefully they would describe me in a positive way! I would say that I genuinely enjoy building on relationships with people. In fact, I have several clients that have over time become personal friends. I think this demonstrates the dedication and passion that I put into my work, going above and beyond to understand the clients’ needs.
What valuable skills do you bring into this new role?
I have experience in various sectors in healthcare and this is an area that we are keen to expand – from Acute, Mental Health to Elderly care and everything in between. I have also designed two elevated helipads on top of buildings which offered some unique challenges!
I love to work with clients and end users to understand how they will use and operate the building and I think one of my strengths is the ability to convey this in a non-technical way. Once I am aware of the needs, I tailor the design to suit.
What have been your greatest career highlights?
I am proud to say that there have been quite a few!
I was the lead Engineer on the National Centre for Mental Health in Birmingham which was a great project to see from conception to completion.
The Forest Centre in Kettering is also a highlight, it is a specialist dementia care facility and 18 months after completion I spent a day in the unit with the Architect, talking to all levels of staff and a patient. We learnt a lot about how the unit operates on a daily basis which I found to be really rewarding and productive, we have subsequently looked at further initiatives based on the feedback.
I have also designed some significant buildings for Jaguar Land Rover in Solihull, which comes with its own unique challenges and solutions.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
I love Birmingham, so I often spend time around the diverse city which has a rich history. I like my cars, I have a kit car but it currently has a blown engine. Depending on how busy calfordseaden keep me, I hope to continue practising my latest hobby of abstract art on canvas.
I also work with a charity that raises money for Children’s charities and I am a regular attendee at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
And finally, how do you see your new role evolving?
The plan is to take a collaborative approach and work on projects from other offices whilst introducing new opportunities that I bring to the business. As this workload grows that is the opportunity to build the Birmingham Building Services team.
I really look forward to seeing how the company will continue to grow and I am confident that my experience and skills can really strengthen our Building Services offering in the Midlands even further.
