Meet the Apprentice: A Practical Path to Chartered Building Surveying

07.09.2018

Our robust apprenticeship programme seeks to encourage new entrants to the construction industry and support them as they grow into their careers. One of our most recent apprentices, Ryan Pinkney, shares how this alternative path to a qualification has proven to be a rewarding and insightful experience.

“A little over ten months ago I joined calfordseaden as a young, aspiring student, eager to start my journey towards becoming a Chartered Building Surveyor. I didn’t particularly know what to expect or how I’d react to the longer working hours the working world demands, but I can safely say that the decision I made to join calfordseaden, and the close-knit community that comes with it, was one of the best decisions I ever made.

From very early on, my sixth form college presented everyone with two options – you can either go to university or go to work. The route of university appealed to the majority, but it didn’t entice me. I found the eye-watering debt and the lifestyle unattractive, so I decided to look into something a little different – combining both with an apprenticeship.

calfordseaden was one of the few companies that offered this, and they haven’t let me down since. The training and support they offer, alongside diverse work and social opportunities, has provided me with a great platform to excel in this industry and accelerated my development as a Building Surveyor.

Working at calfordseaden is exciting, enjoyable and, at times, unpredictable. From being in the office or out on site, one day can be completely different to the next, meaning that I’m always engaged in what I’m doing and never lose interest.

The apprenticeship itself, which is combined with studies at Anglia Ruskin University, has given me invaluable exposure to the construction industry. All areas of Building Surveying are extensively covered, meaning every module is specific to my career. calfordseaden has also developed close ties with the university, keeping them up-to-date with my progress each step of the way.

Despite the challenges and hard work that the apprenticeship presents, I would recommend this option to anyone. The amount of time and effort you put in is key, but the rewards and experience you gain are second to none.

Give me three more years and I’ll hopefully be qualified, looking to take the next step and become a Chartered Building Surveyor!”
