Megan Farmer joins our Health & Safety Team

Megan joined the industry in 2018 and has since worked in a variety of roles from Asbestos Surveying to Business Development and is now settling into her new role as Trainee Health and Safety Consultant at calfordseaden. We catch up with her to find out more about her career journey so far and plans for the future!

Before joining calfordseaden in October 2022, I was working at Cablesheer Group as a Client Relationship Manager for over a year and a half. I was responsible for bringing in new business opportunities to all divisions and maintaining client relationships. 

I really enjoyed this role, particularly the social side and the emotional reward of bringing in new clients and helping the business achieve its goals. However, I felt that I was ready for a change, and I wanted to take the next step and learn something new. I thought to myself ‘you’re 22 years old, this is the perfect time to take the chance and make a change.’ So, that’s exactly what I did! 

Working in business development, I was part of several networking groups and attended different industry events, including the Croydon Construction Excellence Club. This is where I met Chris, the Head of Health and Safety at calfordseaden. Chris had been a member of the group for a few years and I always found him to be friendly and professional. So, when the opportunity arose to work in his team at calfordseaden, I took the leap. 

I am so glad I made the decision to join calfordseaden. I already have a structured career path ahead of me and feel supported by my team. Although my background is in business development, I have strong transferable skills that help me excel in my new role, including time management, managing heavy workloads and confidence. My business and people skills enable me to be adaptable in my approach to different groups, from working with a contractor on site to having an online meeting with a client over Teams. I think this is really valuable for developing strong client relationships.

Since joining, I have started a NEBOSH in Construction Management, and I feel supported by the whole team throughout my studies. I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to embark on a new career path, and I think it is important for more women to have access to the right career guidance and support. I am passionate about encouraging more women to consider a career in construction. As a Board Member for Women in Social Housing (WISH) South East, I have been involved in several networking events aimed at supporting women in the industry. I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from several mentors through WISH, my previous organisations, and calfordseaden, and I hope to be able to pass on that support to junior colleagues. 

I look forward to growing my career at calfordseaden, and hope to be able to qualify as a health and safety consultant in the next year, through gaining more knowledge and continuing to learn and grow my skillset.
