My Health & Safety Career Journey: Elise Smith

My Health & Safety Career Journey: Elise Smith

Elise Smith, Health & Safety Consultant, has recently received her NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction Certificate. To celebrate, she reflects on her route into the industry and experience at calfordseaden so far.

My career journey into Health & Safety started a few years ago, after returning home to the UK from travelling Asia and Australia. My previous roles had been in workers compensation and debt collection, and I was really eager for a career change in a more hands on and rewarding role. I was interested in the Health & Safety sector as I wanted to be able to prevent the issues rather than be on the end of the phone.

As I had no prior experience in Health & Safety, I decided to gain some formal qualifications. I am incredibly proud of myself for independently funding and studying for my NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety before I even secured a job, it is safe to say that my house was covered in sticky notes!

After gaining my certificate, I was offered a position in a consultancy in Bracknell as a Trainee Health & Safety Advisor. While it was challenging starting a whole new career, I found that the communications and empathy skills developed from my previous roles really helped.

Since joining calfordseaden, I have gained more site experience, attending site visits and gained further knowledge by attending with senior members of the team. Every other Thursday I have been attending a site in Fleet owned by Caudwell Homes, which has involved demolition, groundworks and now the steel frames for the warehouse are being erected. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to see the project from the start and look forward to seeing the project complete.

I am incredibly grateful to be part of such a successful company. Now that I have passed my construction NEBOSH, I look forward to hopefully starting my NCRQ Diploma in the future and being able to broaden my knowledge within Health and Safety.
