Re-dedication of Grade II Listed Memorial in Southwark

Saturday 19th September 2015 saw the re-dedication by the Bishop of Southwark of the Grade II listed memorial to the 970 men of 22nd Battalion The London Regiment (The Queen’s) who lost their lives in World War I and World War II.

On 4th March 2013, planning permission was granted for the demolition of an existing army drill hall, located at the junction of Abbey Street and Old Jamaica Road, to be replaced with a new block of 42 shared ownership and 9 rented dwellings for Notting Hill Home Ownership.

Integral to the permission was a requirement to carefully dismantle the War Memorial which was originally constructed in 1921, transport the component parts to safe storage and ultimately re-erect the memorial, partially enclosed by the new building.

The re-dedication ceremony also marks 100 years since the regiment first saw action during World War I.
