Starting my Apprenticeship – Billy Dexter

Billy Dexter, Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, joined calfordseaden in November 2024 and as he prepares to begin his Level 6 Chartered Surveyor course, we spoke to Billy to find out how he has settled in, what he is looking forward to most throughout his apprenticeship, and he provides advice for people considering the apprenticeship route.

Why I chose my Apprenticeship

I always knew I wanted to pursue a career as a Quantity Surveyor and have been passionate about pursuing a career as one since a young age. I completed some work experience as a Quantity Surveyor a few years ago and I loved it. Being on-site and gaining valuable experience and insights was beneficial and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The role of a Quantity Surveyor provides a great balance between gaining practical experience on-site and learning the theory side of the role, in the office and at university.

Joining calfordseaden

Since joining the Practice, my colleagues have been very supportive and helpful. Everyone has provided me with useful advice ahead of starting my course and have offered their guidance for when I begin in March. I feel that the work culture and environment here is perfect for me and my development as a construction professional.

My role as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor

My role entails assisting my colleagues on projects, attending site visits, and helping bring exciting projects to life! I cannot wait to get involved in projects and gain as much exposure and experience as possible. I am eager to broaden my knowledge by learning from my experienced colleagues and work on a variety of projects across a range of sectors, including community, commercial, and residential projects.

Aims and Ambitions

In the short-term, my primary focus is on developing my understanding of the industry, getting started on my course, and to gradually gain more responsibility as I progress in my role. Long-term, I aim to finish my course, attain my degree, and then work toward achieving chartership through the RICS APC assessment.

Advice for Future Apprentices

For those looking to start an apprenticeship or are currently unsure whether they would like to pursue one, I would recommend gaining work experience in a field you are interested in. Work experience offers an opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the role and the nature of the work. Applying for and exploring various work experience opportunities will also provide you with interview practice, which is a valuable skill to have and will be of significant benefit throughout your career.
