calfordseaden and Niblock welcomed several Year 11 Product Design students to a site visit around a current scheme. The students from Harris Academy South Norwood donned hard hats and hi-vis vests for a tour led by members of Niblock and facilitated by John Spence, calfordseaden’s Head of Design.
The visit aimed to showcase the many career avenues available in the construction industry. The students were shown around the site of Fashioning Poplar, a regeneration project that will convert garage blocks into a fashion hub with workspaces, exhibition areas and meeting rooms.
Niblock staff explained and demonstrated every phase of construction through a thorough tour of the site and reviewed the accompanying architectural drawings. The students also had the opportunity to ask a number of questions about the project and design and construction processes.
Harris Academy’s Subject Leader of Art and Design and Technology reported that the visit and experience were inspirational and that the students “spoke passionately about following careers in construction on the journey back to school”.
The visit was part of John Spence’s wider mentoring programme with Harris Academy, which has also included a talk on careers in architecture and a critique of the students’ technical projects.
