The Importance of Networking – Eliakim Asare

Eliakim Asare joined us in January 2024 as a Graduate Design Engineer after graduating from Coventry University. We caught up with him to discuss his journey to date, his role as a Design Engineer, his involvement in networking initiatives, and his future career ambitions.

Education and Choosing My Career

“I followed the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) route throughout secondary school and sixth form, studying Maths, Computer Science, Business Studies, and Italian at A-Level. My passion for STEM subjects naturally led me towards Maths and Computer Science, but I still wasn’t entirely sure about my career path.

“I went on to study Electro-Mechanical Engineering at Coventry University and graduated with First Class Honours. When job hunting, I came across the role at calfordseaden, the job description aligned perfectly with my interests, so I applied and the rest is history!

“Having worked in the construction industry for two years now, I’ve seen just how impactful Engineering is. Many people typically associate construction projects with roles like Surveyors and Project Managers, but Mechanical and Electrical Engineers plays a vital role in making buildings functional. Every system that keeps a building functional is designed by us.”

“Everyone I’ve worked with during my two years here has been incredibly supportive. Every day is a learning curve, I’m developing in my role each day and if I ever need any guidance, my colleagues are always willing to help.

“As a Design Engineer, I put design theory into practice – carrying out calculations, reviewing approved documents, ensuring compliance with statutory guidelines, attending design team meetings, and producing detailed schematics and system layouts.

“A memorable project I’ve worked on is Monkscroft, a new build development of 70 affordable homes in Cheltenham. We essentially had a blank canvas to work from in terms of the design requirements, and it was also my first experience being in a design team meeting, which was a big milestone for me. Another standout project was Merrymakers in Slough, due to the unique requirements of the design package. This project consisted of the conversion of a pub into 53 affordable homes.”

The Importance of Networking

“Over recent months, I’ve started to attend a lot of networking events, CPD sessions, panel discussions, and socials organised by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). I first came across these events through calfordseaden, who promote CIBSE internally, and through them I discovered the Young Engineers Network (YEN). I’ve attended informative seminars on topics ranging from best practice in hot water heat pump design to sustainable and efficient air conditioning systems.

“At an Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion panel event, I met the Head of the CIBSE Neurodivergent Community. Since then, I’ve joined the Community and contributed to discussions aimed at helping companies better support neurodiverse employees.

“I highly recommend these types of events to both new and experienced construction professionals. They’re great opportunities to learn, relax, meet like‑minded people, and potentially open doors to new opportunities.”

Visiting My Old School

“As a Haberdashers’ Knight’s Academy Alumni, I was invited to exhibit at the annual careers fair in December 2025. When I was a student, we had access to STEM ambassadors, but nothing specifically related to engineering.

I was delighted to attend with my colleague and fellow engineer, Alina, to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals, showcase the work we do at calfordseaden, share our journeys, and highlight the career paths available within engineering and the built environment.”

Goals and Career Progression

“As I continue to grow in my role, I’m excited to gradually take on more responsibility, lead design teams, expand my technical knowledge, and continue building my professional network. In the long term, my primary goal is to become a Chartered Engineer.”
