My Surveying Career Journey: Beth Bosteels

My Surveying Career Journey: Beth Bosteels

After obtaining a BSc in Construction in Belgium, I worked in telecoms providing design and specification for Radio Base stations for the 3G roll out, which was the height of technology at the time. After moving to the UK, I wanted to get back into construction and began to study part-time at Northumbria University, while working for a local Building Surveyor. I completed my Master’s degree and then obtained RICS member status in 2012. I am proud to say that I was one of the first people in the UK to obtain accreditation in BIM practice for Project Management through a course at RICS.

After completing my masters, I worked at Gould & Co for over 11 years, where I designed and specified both domestic and commercial projects for private and corporate clients. One of my most notable projects was the Sussex FA Headquarters and football stand. Before this, I had worked for the Major Projects team at Cunningham Lindsey, dealing with damaged properties due to fire, floods etc. I was specifying and organising the repair work, while liaising with the loss adjusters and dealing with Insurance requirements, aiming to get my clients back into their home as soon as practically possible. Prior to joining calfordseaden, I was working at Cowan Architects and Currie & Brown, where I was developing the companies BIM strategy to work to Level 2 BIM, while also carrying out a surveying role.

My greatest career highlights have been getting Chartered and being involved in the delivery of Lancing FC Headquarters and stand, from conception to use. Which, due to the enhanced facilities, is now the new Brighton & Hove Albion training ground. As part of a sponsorship scheme, I have the honour of having a brick with my name on it on the building behind the stand. It is little things like this that really make the job special.

With all my projects, I aim to work closely with my clients, from the initial meeting, through the planning process and the construction work, to the final delivery of the project, to ensure their requirements are met. I have always taken pride take pride in a professional delivery with personal approach. I enjoy working on a range of projects across different sectors, but I am particularly passionate about sustainable architecture and heritage buildings, especially where the two overlap in the use of traditional building materials. Although through my work in Belgium, I also have experience with formwork and concrete architecture. I love working on defects and finding the correct building detail for the solution of a problem.

I was aware of calfordseaden for some time, as they had a good reputation in the industry. I was keen to find out more about growing my career at calfordseaden, and the interview gave me a very positive feeling about potential colleagues and the company ethos. Since joining, I have felt extremely supported by close colleagues and the wider company. It has been very encouraging to witness the effort made to ensure that all staff feel truly valued and supported, especially during these challenging circumstances.

I am excited to grow my career even further at calfordseaden, and I look forward to working on a number of exciting projects particularly high-rise buildings to replace combustible materials and provide people with a safe home again.
