Eltham’s new Community Hospital is a template for a new generation of ‘all in one’ facilities providing primary and community care services. The hospital features modern facilities, with many single rooms having private ensuite bedrooms.
The new hospital comprises of 40 bed inpatient ward and associated facilities, day-surgery operating theatre, outpatients services, diagnostic suite comprising X-ray and ultrasound, Endoscopy suite, Ophthalmology, podiatry, mental health services, community nursing services and two GP practices.
During the final phases of the building’s construction local residents were given the opportunity to submit suggestions for the name of the two new wards, which were:
- The Fergusson Ward after Dr Fergusson, who was based at the old Cottage Hospital (which occupied the new hospital’s Passey Place site from the 1880s)
- The Nesbit Ward celebrates the famous author Edith Nesbit, who wrote The Railway Children whilst living at Well Hall in Eltham from 1899 to 1922.
