calfordseaden has been appointed on this scheme to provide structural engineering design services on behalf of Bellway Homes.
The scheme, known as ‘St. Clements Lakes’ will provide 156 residential units comprising of 50 houses and 106 flats across five blocks up to five storeys in height for affordable rent and for sale.
The units will be constructed using mainly loadbearing masonry with precast concrete floors; two blocks will consist of an RC frame up to the first floor podium level and structural steelwork will be used for balconies and roof structures on some blocks.
In addition to the residential units, the scheme will also provide one commercial unit as part of the phase two element of the site. The scheme will also utilise sustainable technologies with the installation of PV panels.
calfordseaden is responsible for the design of the piled foundations and superstructure. Challenges included addressing issues associated with building in a partially filled chalk quarry and adapting the design part way through to allow a different form of construction for the superstructure to be employed on the flats.
