The Valkyrie Road Primary Care Centre is one of several centres being developed by the primary care trust to provide enhanced services more conveniently placed for the local community.
The location of the centre, within an established residential area, resulted in a need to work within tight constraints. To overcome this issue the design for the centre delivered a compact building focussed around two internal courtyards, which deliver natural light to entire building, whilst also providing natural ventilation throughout. The building has been integrated into the neighbourhood by following the line of the street and using similar materials to those used within the surrounding buildings.
This scheme incorporates the relocation of two GP practices and community services from Westcliff Clinic. The centre provides a range of other services including: a pharmacy, podiatry clinics, podiatric surgery, outpatient’s facility, minor operations, speech and language therapy and ultrasound services as well as a Diabetes clinic and a school nursing immunisation team. The centre also provides meeting facilities, which are available to hire. The scheme is also able to accommodate additional services within the centre in the future to provide a community based centre.
calfordseaden undertook extensive stakeholder consultation throughout the scheme. GPs, healthcare teams and residents were all consulted at key stage throughout in the design process via consultation events. This ensured a successful scheme that delivered both the requirements of the health care teams and the local residents.
