Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion: A Conversation with Lidia Andrioni for National Inclusion Week

National Inclusion Week is an ideal time to recognise and celebrate the different perspectives and experiences that individuals bring to our workplaces. Lidia, whose background is a blend of Italian and Brazilian heritage, shares her journey in the construction industry and her insights into the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Could you tell us a bit about your background Lidia?

My family heritage includes Brazilian parents and a grandfather who embarked on a journey from Italy to Brazil in the early 1900s. I was born in Brazil, spent six months in Italy before graduating in Brazil, and then pursued my master’s degree in Portugal. For several years now, I have called the UK my home, where I wholeheartedly enjoy living.

How has your experience been with calfordseaden?

My journey in the construction industry has been marked by opportunities and unwavering support. During my apprenticeship at calfordseaden, I have had the opportunity to complete an English course, which greatly facilitated my transition into the role. The BIM team extended a warm welcome and displayed remarkable patience as I navigated my way through language barriers. I commend my college tutor for effective communication and believe this, combined with my small course group meaning more one to one time with my tutor, contributed to my development. I would also like to extend my gratitude to my calfordseaden colleagues who went above and beyond to ensure my success, even converting my diploma to make my apprenticeship in the UK possible.

I deeply value the efforts of colleagues like Bola Osoba, who took the time to understand my unique background and culture. Our daily interactions have built bridges of understanding and appreciation, but most importantly, a close friendship. My team has played a pivotal role in fostering cultural diversity, and I am very appreciative for my manager, Varun Soni’s, understanding and willingness to accommodate my needs.

What does diversity, equality, and inclusion mean to you?

To me, diversity is a multifaceted concept that involves acknowledging differences in gender, age, and cultural backgrounds. I firmly believe that diversity enriches our work environments by bringing in unique perspectives and histories. My view of inclusion is rooted in recognising these differences as strengths and embracing the opportunity to live and work together without attempting to change one another.

How would you advocate for diversity with someone who doesn’t understand it’s importance?

I am a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion. My personal experiences, especially as a woman in the construction industry, have equipped me with the strength to stand up for myself and assert that my abilities transcend any preconceived notions based on her accent or gender. I acknowledge the unwavering support I receive from the BIM team, who stand beside me in overcoming obstacles and ensuring that diversity is not just a buzzword but a lived reality.
